I learned a lot from my grandfather – about money, sports, and family relationships. A Harvard educated accountant and business leader, he taught me about saving, budgeting, and spending money wisely. An avid sportsman, he also shared his love of fishing and of course, Indiana University basketball. However, when his health declined, I witnessed what can happen when people are reluctant to discuss and plan for some of life’s most challenging transitions. A bitter and lengthy estate settlement ensued which was costly not only in terms of money, but more importantly in the erosion of our family’s cohesiveness – and things were never quite the same.
I’ve dedicated my life to helping individuals break the silence that often surrounds money, whether between spouses, parents and their children, adult children and aging parents, or business owners and their partners and employees. I believe with compassionate understanding and careful planning, aided by collaboration with a client’s trusted business, tax and legal advisors, wealth can be built, managed, protected, and distributed in a positive, productive, and purposeful manner.
I earned a degree in Finance and Management from Indiana University and have extensive experience practicing investment and wealth management – exercising my judgment with care, skill, and caution. What I enjoy most about my work is helping my clients understand and address three types of risk: portfolio risks associated with investments; non-portfolio risks relating to longevity, disability, property and casualty, and personal liability; and behavioral risks associated with the personal biases and habits that can affect financial decision-making.
Now my family, along with lessons learned from the past, serve as constant reminders of the impact that my work has on my clients’ families, now and for years to come.
